Congratulations
According to the league website, we finished in a first place tie with the Owls at 14-4.
Since we split games with them, winning one by one run and losing one by one run, this is truly a tie situation. I'll see if I can find out about a trophy. As soon as I hear, we can set a date for the post-season party and present the trophy to the owners of Stars & Stripes.
This is a nice touch on an excellent season.

Stripes Finish Successful Season - Boniface for MVP
Well, you just knew it was bound to happen again. Al Boyd, 2 outs, tie game, time up, runners on....This time he delivered. (boy he's gonna kill me for that!) (Just kidding Al!!!)
In uncharacteristic Boyd fashion nonetheless -- a can of corn that dropped in -- Chris Boniface, who will likely win his first MVP award, scored from 3rd, and the Stripes win. And the stands emptied onto the field to celebrate with the Stripes as they finished a 14-4 season, not knowing if they won the league or not.
Surely Herr Meldrum will let us know when he finds out.
The post-game celebration at our sponsor featured a sure-to-be-locked-out-of-his-house-by-his-angry-wife Mike Chapman holding court and ensuring that we fulfilled our fiscal responsibility to our patron.
Stay Tuned for final stats and news about season awards and post-season party.
Great Season Boys!
Thanks Tom

Tom Meldrum's Review
Last night, after a back-and-forth first game with Deuces Wild, we ended up losing 17-16 in the last inning. After they scored six runs in the top of the last inning to go ahead by three, we rallied to score two runs and had men on first and second with two outs. Unfortunately we weren't able to push across the tying run. In the second game, Deuces Wild scored 9 runs in the bottom of the first inning, and things were really looking bleak. However, in the top of the second inning we batted around twice and scored 17 runs. Deuces Wild could manage only three more runs in the last three innings, and we won 25-12 in four innings.

Review of 10/24's Soggy Game
From El Capitan Meldrum:
Last Monday, despite the rainy conditions, we were able to play the first game. I am happy to report that we forged a 9-4 win in five innings. Brad pitched an excellent game, holding Medium Pace scoreless until the bottom of the last inning.
Of course our defense was a big contributor to this, with excellent plays in both the infield and outfield. Mike Chapman made what may have been the play of the season when he raced back to his left for a ball hit deep to the fence, got the end of his glove on the ball only to have it pop out, but then caught the ball as he was falling to the soggy ground. I believe that one of his feet hit the bottom of the fence as he was making the final catch. Since there were two men on base at the time with two outs, that catchwas huge for us.
Mike also had several big hits, as did Chris Boniface, Jeff Donald and Al Schneider. Al Boyd had a big two-out double in the top of the fourth inning to drive in our last two runs. I think his screaming line drive actually hit the bottom of the left-center-field fence on the fly, which at Shirley Park is quite a poke.I'm still trying to reconstruct the scorebook stats, as despite my best efforts to keep them covered, the game pages got quite wet. I have not heard anything about a makeup for the rained-out second game. As soon as I do, I'll let everyone know.

Next up: Co-First Place Clouts
Game On, for now.
Stay tuned to hear from Tom in the event that our opponent forfeits.
Next up are the potent Clouts, who are co-leaders of the C-2 division with yours truly. The Clouts are coming off an impressive sweep of the Lollygaggers in which they scored 44 runs. We'll need all of our bats to show up, so be ready.
First pitch: 6:30 at Quincy Park.

Stripes give 'em the Mr. Miyagi Treatment
The Stripes came with sweep on the mind against the middling Kai last night at beautiful Shirley Park.
With rain pelting us, the Stripes were able to send all 10 men to the plate in what has become our trademark 1st inning rally, plating 6 runs, which would prove to be enough. Tommy"White Shoes" Meldrum anchored the defense with some fine plays on come-backers and kept the Kai on their heals at the plate all night. Andrew "mini-meldrum" Kessler's hot bat stayed that way driving in several runs with some nice ropes. Final score: 13-5.
In game 2, with the rain going away, the Kai's bats woke up and once again, the Stripes bats hit a mid-game slump, scoring only 1 run in the final 4 innings. Luckily that was the run that counted as the Stripes grinded out a tough win, 9-8.
Special mention to Joe, who once again bailed out the Stripes with his play in left field, keeping the Kai in check, and Tom's great pitching, no thanks to several un-earned runs the Stripes gave up. A tough 2 wins should keep us near the top of the standings.

Cobra Kai Up Next
The 4-4 Cobra Kai are up next for the 2nd place Stripes.
Coming off a split with the Deuces Wild in which the Kai scored 28 runs, we know the Kai can swing the bats.
Our bats will need to resemble the first game from last week in order to keep up. Despite our disappointing split, the Stripes are still in 2nd place and ready ot move up.
First Pitch is at 6:30 at ghetto Shirley Park.

Stripes split with Sliders
Once again, the Stripes bats were hot out of the gate in game 1 against the Sliders. Duplicating our effort last week, we scored 16 runs and beat the Sliders 16 - 9. Dave Buttner, solid as always in the lead-off spot went 4-4 and almost incited a bench-clearer after a Bush League play by the Sliders shortstop. And then there was Al "Pop" Schneider, who was 3-3 with 3 runs 4 rbis and legged out a nice triple.
Game 2 was a different story as the Stripes bats, with the exception of the second inning when we scored 5 of our 7 runs, went cold. In 3 straight innings we went 3 -and-out and actually had a string of 8 straight fly ball outs. A late rally flamed out as we fell short by the score of 9 - 7.
Special mention to Brad Battista for a fine pitching performance.
Next Games are at 6:30 at the same Shirley "Don't call me Gunston although I have no idea why I'm called Shirley" Park, against a tough Cobra Kai team.

Sliders Up Next
Next game is this Monday at 8:30 at Shirley Park.
The Sliders are 2-4 on the season thus far, in 10th place in the league. They have shown the ability to score runs on occasion, but if we play the way we played on Monday, the Stripes should find success.
After the game, please remember to tune into Ch. 7 and watch America's Team spank the Foreskins. Go Cowboys!

Lollygaggers Lollygag Too Much
Well, after a 2 week layoff the Stripes were evidently rarin' to go.
The Lollygaggers apparently had time management issues, which lead to the Stripes winning the first game by forfeit, 7-0. Jeff Morris claims to have driven in 4 of those runs. Strangely they didn't make it into the stats.
And the Stripes felt like we needed to cram all of those runs into the first inning of "game 2", sending 17 batters to the plate and scoring 12 runs. Is that a record Tom?
The Lollygaggers bats woke up, but could never catch up. Final score: 16-9.

Lollygaggers Up Next
The 2-2 Stripes will next face the 2-2 Lollygaggers.
The Lollygaggers are coming off an impressive sweep of Medium Pace, scoring 29 runs in the 2 games, after scoring just 5 in their opening series.
Our bats will need to be ready to go to keep up with such a high-powerd offense.
Game 1 begins at 8 pm at Virginia Highlands.

Stripes Split with Sember
An undermanned Stripes earned a tough split with a good-hitting CC-Sember team. Game 1 was marred by untimely errors by the Stripes. The bats, however, came alive in the second game as the Stripes rebounded.

Opening Series Split
After a lazy summer break, the newly-reconstituted Stars and Stripes came out or the gates iun the fall season with a deserved split.
Typically our bats in the first series of the season are quiet, though there were some flashes of the Stripes' late season form in this series.
After eeking out a Game 1 win, the Stripes came tantalizingly close to coming back in the 2nd game, before falling 10-8.
Stats will be posted ASAP.
